Throwback Thursdays: Run, Jump, Scrap!

It’s that time of week where it can only mean one thing; it’s time for our Throwback Thursdays series! Each week, you’ll be able to find more about the childhoods of some of the very best parenting bloggers; their treasured memories and best bits, even how their own upbringing has affected their parenting style. So settle down and get comfy, it’s time to take a trip down memory lane.

This Throwback Thursday, I’m joined by Sarah from Run, Jump, Scrap. Sarah’s blog follows her life as a mum to 2 gorgeous little girls, captured by her beautiful photography. Her writing is refreshingly honest and has a way of making you feel like she’s there talking to you with a cup of tea in hand on the edge of your sofa! Today, she’s chatting about her memories of holidays, tormenting the cat and her relationship with her own parents.

Hi, I’m Sarah…

I blog over at Run Jump Scrap. I live in the West Midlands with my hubby and 2 girls, affectionately known as the gremlin and Piglet over on the blog. They are 3 years and 6 months old respectively. I’m a dietitian when I work and I love fitness, so live in the gym! I also like to make scrapbook pages for my girls when I have time. I love Saturday night cava nights with the hubby, shopping, eating and spending time with my family.

Apart from the sadness of my parents splitting up when I was 8, I had a great childhood. I was born in Leeds and moved to Staffordshire when I was 3. I always had great fun bossing my brother around and playing games. I was lucky to enjoy school and have some lovely friends. Although I never went on a plane until I was 16, I have great memories of the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and Scarborough during my school hols. I also used to stay with my Grandparents and spent a few days with my Nanna alone, which was fun.

My earliest memory..

Is probably of my cat, Hazel, who I used to torment. That and spending time at my neighbour’s house. She looked after me a few times to help my Mum out. She had loads of dolls I used to play with and I thought she was wonderful.

My Throwback Thursday photo…

Is of me, my brother and my Dad. I think my brother and I are the same age as the gremlin and Piglet now. It’s special as my Dad is no longer with us, so I like to look back at pictures of when we were little. I like the way that I am touching my Dad’s hand, even though he is holding my brother. It’s like, “This is MY Dad too!”

The best bit of growing up…

Was just generally being happy. I don’t remember feeling massively insecure about myself (even though I had my moments being a flat-chested, brace wearing, frizzy haired red-head). The joys of no social media! You know no different and appreciate what you have. The worst bit was probably my Dad leaving when I was 8.

I want my children to experience…

Being able to talk to us about anything. I have always been close to my Mum, and my Dad was extremely laid back so I asked him A LOT! It included stuff about sex and boys and I was comfortable asking that. I enjoyed a good sense of humour with my family; there was a lot of banter. I had an amazing relationship with my grandparents; they had so much time for me and played with me for hours. I hope my girls have this too. I also hope my girls stay close like me and my brother.

I’m honest and open with my girls. My Mum was shouty now and then but we needed it, so I definitely save my shouts for occasions and it works. I have a good laugh with my eldest daughter and I think it helps with her behaviour too.

It’s harder growing up these days…

Social media and the web make every move you make judged and looked upon. I felt pressure to look a certain way but never the same way as now. There were no selfies and phones. I definitely move with the times but I do fear the teenage years for my girls a little.

If I could be any age, I’d be…

Fourteen, I had a great time that year at school. It was pre GCSEs and I remember everything was just so hilarious. I had good friends and was happy.
