Our Favourites: Gifts For A One Year Old

Struggling to know what to buy your favourite one year old? In need of a birthday gift, a christmas present or just an unexpected treat? Here’s a selection of some of our favourite gifts for a one year old, each one personally approved by the resident one year old, how handy is that?!

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe – Dino

Available in a range of styles, our favourite Cozy Coupe has to be the ‘Dino’. Complete with horn, swivelling front wheels for easy manoeuvring and a door than can be locked closed it’s a perfect gift that will last for a good few years. It comes with a removable footwell insert that you can keep in until your little one is old enough to use their own leg power to move it around. Until then, you’re on pushing duties, thankfully there’s an adult friendly handle in the roof. The chances are if your child is anything like ours, they’ll even want to eat their dinner in it.

Wonderworld Wooden Rainbow Sound Blocks

The brightly coloured blocks tick major gift giving boxes due to their wooden construction and sensory properties. Beautifully made, each block encases a noise making bead (or more) inside a coloured window. Hold them up to your one year old’s eyes to turn their world a different colour or encourage plenty of noise making with each one making a different sound. The best bit for us has to be the storage box. Not only is it endless fun arranging them in different patterns inside but the lid makes a very satisfying clap as it shuts. At least that’s what I’ve heard. Over and over.

That’s Not My…’ Books

These are HUGE favourites in our household and with a vast range to choose from, there really is a book to suit every child’s favourites. With textures on every page that encourage plenty of interaction, there’s even a fun game of spot the mouse to play throughout. My favourite has to be ‘That’s Not My Puppy’ due to the shaggy ears that even I want to stroke. We’ve got eight of these books and I think I’m word perfect on every single one. That’s how popular they are!

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pounding Bench

Show me a one year old who doesn’t love bashing things… This pounding bench from Melissa & Doug is a lovely example of a simple product, done well. With a rocker action underneath, you push one coloured peg down and it’s opposite pops up; saving you from having to continually reset the toy! With eight brightly coloured pegs, you can either use the hammer or your fingers to push down the pegs and learn colours at the same time.

B Luckeys

Help a parent out and save their keys from constantly being stolen by gifting this superb set of keys. Made from teething friendly stainless steel, they stay cool like ‘proper’ car keys do. Four buttons on the main fob produce three different sounds ready to start your car journey and activate a light. Ready to go out of the box, these are ideal for teething toddlers or those obsessed with keys. Or both!

BigJigs Toys – My First Safari Wooden Peg Puzzle

There’s a huge variety of peg puzzles out there but these chunkier, simple designs are far more likely to be used as actual puzzles by the one year old in question due to their simplicity. Combine bright colours with safari animals that older children can match to the correct food they eat and again, you’ve got a gift that lasts. Plus you get to practice your monkey impression… Something we’ve nailed in this household.

Our Favourites: Gifts For A One Year Old

And there we have it, a selection fit for a first birthday. Reckon we’ve missed any must haves?

How cool is that rainbow sounds block! I love wooden toys so it’s right up my street 🙂 My son is one and he would absolutely LOVE the cozy coupe. Great choices! x

We love our little tykes cars. My son is nearly 3.5 and still goes in his daily and I can’t see it’s appeal going any time soon. My niece has the dinosaur one – it’s particularly cool. Wish I had known about the Melissa and Doug peg toy a year ago, love how you can’t lose the pegs – great! Kate x

It’s such a good one – the other pegs pop up when you knock it’s opposite down as well so you don’t have to reset it every couple of seconds… INCREDIBLE!

Some really fab ideas here! We have a Cosy Coupe, but my goodness was it a tough build haha. We have countless That’s Not My books too, and they’re still loved by both of mine (and they’re 3 and almost 2!) xx

Oh I know! Thankfully it was a gift from my parents so my Dad put it together in advance… it terrified me that I was going to have to do it!

    • DevonMamaOnline 17th June 2017 at 1:48 pm

There are some real classic gifts there!!

  • Nicola 17th June 2017 at 5:19 pm

So many great ideas here for first birthday gifts. Looks like your little boy was well and truly spoilt! And why not eh?

    • DevonMamaOnline 19th June 2017 at 9:50 pm

So spoilt, the amount of toys in our house is just extreme. We joke that that’s why we need an extension so god knows what would ever happen if we had another. We’d probably end up abandoning the house to them and Dave and I living in a tent in the garden!
