Our Home: Designing The Hall

My favourite part of any renovation project is this bit; the decorating. Once the paint is on the walls, it’s a blank canvas perfect for me to start plotting away at how to best fill it. Now we’ve made a good start on the playroom, it’s time to put a bit of focus into somewhere more people are likely to see; the hallway!

Our hall used to be a very dark, narrow space. You open the front door, the stairs are in front of you and there was a mass of doors. Now that we’ve opened it up more, it’s far less gloomy but it can still be quite dark. In order to compensate for that I want to make sure it has an uncluttered and airy feel, whilst still feeling warm and welcoming. We’re fortunate that we’ve added a porch so don’t need to factor in any coat storage at this point – thankfully!

A Mirror

First on my wish list is a large mirror. I love adding mirrors to spaces, especially duller areas of the house. It’s such a great way to make a space feel larger and amplify any natural light that’s in there already. It’s also a little vain of me. I like to be able to make a last minute assessment of how scruffy I look before I head out/answer the door. That way, I’ve got a second or two to smooth back any unruly hair! I love the White Company mirror range, we already have one in our bedroom upstairs. For the hall, I really fancy this round mirror from their Chiltern range (yes, it’s not the cheapest, but there’s always a White Company voucher code to be found!)

Storage

Hall storage is hugely important for us. I want a place to pop my keys, somewhere to finally display some flowers and most importantly, I need a way to hide our wifi router and various cables! Our hallway is quite  narrow space and, with radiators and doorways to consider, finding something small and compact is key. I’ve hunted high and low for console tables but need the additional storage underneath so we’ve settled on more of a small cupboard unit like this one from Oak Furniture Solutions. I’m intending on adapting this slightly by drilling a hole in the back to feed the cables through, allowing us to hide all the unsightly mess that’s currently cluttering up our hall. Again, don’t forget to check for an voucher code for Oak Furniture Solutions… it means you can increase your budget and get something that will really last.

Softening Touches

I really want the effect of fresh flowers in the hall but with the poor sunlight I know a plant would struggle and fresh flowers every week are a luxury too far at the moment. I’ve splashed out on some faux foliage from Rose and Grey to help soften the effect in the hall. I’ve already got the perfect decanter style case that will hold them in place! As a final touch, I want a bowl or spot to contain our keys. We have key storage in the utility for the mass of keys our house has but this is more for a daily drop point for the car and front door keys… you know the thing! The house is fairly neutral so to play against the soft greens of the eucalyptus I’ll be adding this bowl (also a Rose and Grey purchase) to bring a hint of colour and fun to the area.

And there we have it, the perfect entranceway to our home. What do you think?
