Cheese Pasta & Tuna Recipe For Baby Led Weaning

Who doesn’t love easy tuna recipes, especially a tuna recipe for baby led weaning? This easy cheese pasta and canned tuna recipe is a hit with both our nine month old and the older kids. I’ve even been known to scrape the saucepan out for bits after… it’s yummy, quick to make and. If you’re wondering how to serve canned tuna to a baby, this is it! I’ve put some recipe amounts on there to allow you a rough idea but the recipe can easily be increased as required, or why not add a different veg in there? We love adding some peas and even a little grated carrot at times – the more, the merrier!

Can Weaning Babies Have Tuna?

Yes! General advice is that babies can be introduced to tuna from the moment they start weaning at six months so serving up a tuna recipe for baby forms part of a balanced diet bringing fish into your child’s diet. Tuna is an excellent source of protein as well as being a good source of Omega-3; something that is recommended for brain and eye development. For both of these reasons, tuna is a great addition to a weaning baby’s menu, and a good taste for them to get accustomed to as they grow.

What Type Of Tuna Should I Give My Baby?

Not sure how to serve canned tuna to a baby? It’s really easy as it’s already cooked. Simply drain it and go. We use canned tuna thanks to it’s good shelf life and it’s affordability. Personal preference in our household is for the chunks in spring water rather than in oil, these are then drained and used. Spring water means you avoid the additional salt from brine and the additional oiliness from sunflower oil although for babies we would recommend the chunks in oil secondly after spring water, then brined.

Cheese Pasta & Tuna Recipe For Baby Led Weaning

Makes 3 child’s portions

You Will Need:

  • 1/2 tin of tuna
  • 50g grated cheese
  • A small jar of sugar free pasta sauce
  • 100g penne pasta
  • 4 tbsp of sweetcorn (we use canned but frozen is fine, just cook either in with the pasta or beforehand)

To Make:

  1. Boil the pasta as per instructions, we prefer to cook it well so that the pasta is fairly soft due to a younger weaning child
  2. Drain the pasta, return it to the pan and remove from heat
  3. Drain the tin of tuna well, add half to the pan with the pasta along with half of the cheese, the sweetcorn and the pasta sauce. You want enough sauce to cover the pasta well – any excess can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge
  4. Stir well, return to the heat to warm through and melt cheese
  5. Serve with the extra cheese sprinkled on top!
