How To Decorate Your House This Christmas (On A Budget!)

Getting ready for Christmas takes a lot of effort, but some tasks, like decorating your home can be great fun. This can even be the case if you are working on a tight budget. There are plenty of ways to decorate your home without having to spend a fortune. Read on for our top tips on how to decorate your house this Christmas (on a budget!).

Get creative with tinsel

There is plenty of fun tinsel for Christmas available in the shops and the good news is that none of it is expensive. You only have to spend a few pounds to get your hands on meters of lovely sparkly tinsel and there is a lot you can do with it.

It is fantastic for decorating the tree and running along the edge of shelves. Plus, nothing seems to capture kid’s imaginations more than having some tinsel fun! You can get very creative with it. If you click this link, you’ll find dozens of beautiful tinsel based DIY Christmas decorations.

Make your own decorations

Making your own Christmas decorations is great fun. If you have kids they will love helping you to do it. There are literally hundreds of how to guides and videos available online that show you exactly how to make all kinds of decorations. Potentially, you can take some of last year’s decorations and rework them.

The nice thing about this approach is that you end up with truly unique Christmas decorations. If you get really good at it, you could always use your new found skills to earn a little extra cash by selling them online or at local markets. They can also make good presents, we’ll be making salt dough decorations this year to give to grandparents!

Give ornaments a festive look

Potentially you can pick up ornaments for a few pence at charity shops and turn them into festive centrepieces. For example, an old pair of ice skates that have been sprayed white could make a really interesting centrepiece for a door wreath. You can have a lot of fun with this idea. Sometimes all you need to do is to take an interesting shaped ornament, wrap it in Christmas paper and spray it with a transparent lacquer to protect it. When I was younger, my mum used to make centrepieces out of satsumas; some we’d paint with gold gilt paint, some we’d wrap ribbon around and others we would pierce with cloves.

Make the most of your cards

When you receive Christmas cards, make the most of them and turn them into a decoration of their own. Instead of just crowding them all together on your mantelpiece, spread them out a bit. Hang some on a string to give a wall a more Christmassy look or put a few on your dining room or side tables. Stringing them along the walls will also give you a little more space to see each card, rather than them just being a sea of designs on a table!

Get the presents out early

Nothing is more festive than a pile of presents under the tree. As you buy items, wrap them up straight away and put them under the tree. If you are mostly buying small presents or cannot afford many (or you have children prone to unwrapping things!), wrapping some empty boxes up in Christmas paper is a good way to create a bigger pile. Just be sure to explain to the kids that some of the presents are purely there for decorative purposes; this avoids them accidentally opening one up on Christmas morning and being disappointed with an empty box!

Use fairy lights

Fairy lights are not too expensive and can turn the most boring of areas into something beautiful. Provided you buy the low energy kind, they also do not cost much to run. You can do all kinds of things with these lights, including creating festive shapes and running them along the mantelpiece or winding them around items of furniture to create a more festive feel. Try putting some in a large vase or lantern to make a feature of them.

This is a really great post! Decorations are so important for Christmas but they can end up costing a fortune and that’s not an extra cost you need in the festive period! Making you’re own is cheap and it’s also great fun for the family to get together and involved!

Thanks Caitlin. I love making our own, I can’t wait until our son is old enough to start making paper chains! We used to decorate the entire place in them!
