Our Home: The Toddler Bedroom Inspo

With less than a couple of months to go until we add another little person to the family, we’re frantically decorating the last two bedrooms. One will become an office/spare room space (more details to follow in future posts) whilst the other will be the toddler’s bedroom. Our plan is to get it ready now, prior to baby arriving, so that we can move him into it as soon as he’s ready to come out of the cot… I’m thinking never!!

In the meantime, I’m here researching little bits and pieces to help create the perfect toddler bedroom. I want to get that balance between practical and Pinterest, with a dollop of fun and the knowledge that it’ll last him for a good few years. With that in mind, we’ve decided to go for fairly neutral decoration and then add some child friendly touches that we can update as time goes on. Here’s what I’m currently thinking…

Storage

With built in cupboards big enough for him to live in, we’re not too concerned about putting in additional storage. However, one of my concerns is how to house the library of books that he’s curating. I want them to be accessible to him but still nice and tidy, I’m really tempted by the GLTC library table which would allow him plenty of access even if it is a bit pricey. GLTC have plenty of offers on throughout the year so I could be tempted at any point!

The Bed Frame

As the room is big enough, we’ve decided to keep our double mattress in there for the time being. We tend to keep the bedroom for sleeping at the moment so don’t need the extra floor space just yet. This means we’re a little stuck for bed frames that aren’t too grown up but still fit a double mattress. As a compromise, we’re leaning towards keeping the mattress on the floor (how very Montessori of us!) but putting a home-made frame around it. I love the wooden ‘house’ outline frames like this one from Howe and Zo, I’ll be asking our handyman aka. my dad, if he can make us one to fit a double mattress. I’m not sure how feasible it is, or practical, but I’d love it if we can make this Pinterest dream a reality.

Lighting

One of the easiest areas for us to have a little fun is with the lighting in the room. Shades and lamps are so easy to simple to update when the time comes and are relatively inexpensive. I’ve been searching through the children’s range at Lights and have found some that would fit in a treat. Currently I’m thinking of using a sky theme in order to keep in with the grey/blue colours in the room, so an aeroplane pendant light would work perfectly up amongst the clouds (ceiling!)

Wall Hooks

There’s always a mass of coats and bags to hang up (especially the nursery bag!) so I’m looking to add some character with our wall hooks. In the nursery, we used hooks shaped like giraffe heads to add some fun and this time I’m thinking of using these clouds from Kidly. I can’t quite decide if I’d rather use them as the door handles on the cupboards or as stand alone wall hooks though… decisions decisions!

And there we have it, just a few of the little touches I’m considering to turn a fairly boring, adult friendly room into a toddler haven. What do you think, have I missed anything?

This all looks amazing! He’ll be leaping out of the cot to sleep in here! We had the double mattress on the floor – will also work wonders for a parent to sleep in when little one arrives so someone gets sleep

That was our thinking, although I’m a little worried Dave thinks he’s going to be permanently sleeping in there once this baby arrives!

Floor mattresses all the way here. First time round we muddled through with poor sleep and resentment on my part as I sat in a chair for night feeds and looked across at my husband snoring happily in the bed. Second time round we just split the night time parenting, me and babe in our room and G with the 4 year old. It was so much easier for me and good for our eldest E to have Daddy nearby so he didn’t wake me in the morning.
All the best with the rest of the decorating and final weeks with bump x

It is SO nice to hear someone else say how good that sounds. I’m a little nervous about it to be honest, anything that allows him freedom from the cot is terrifying BUT I think it’ll be good for there to be space for Dave to comfort him and hopefully stop us disturbing EVERYONE in the middle of the night!! Thanks for the well wishes! x

I love that plane light! Think you may be to blame for me changing the light fitting in my kids room again! Haha.

      It’s so cute isn’t it?! I’m a little in love with it…
