Travel: Six Places You Must Visit In Devon

Thinking about taking a holiday but not sure where to go? Why not come to Devon? It’s not just fields and farmers (although we have plenty of those), we’ve got all sorts of beautiful places packed in between our two coastlines. Not convinced? Here are six places you must visit in Devon.

Saunton Sands

If you’re looking for a beach perfect for families then look no further. Saunton Sands is a humongous sandy beach situated in North Devon. With plenty of space for setting up camp for the day, there’s the option to practice your surfing or challenge your loved ones to a sandcastle competition. The huge sand dunes at the rear of the beach are great for wearing out your dog as well (trust me!). We loved our stay in the beach villas, just moments from the beach. There’s nothing better than waking up and going straight to the sea!

Tarka Trail

For families who like activity, the Tarka Trail should make your list of things to do. A 30 mile former railway line, it stretches from Barnstaple to Braunton and provides a relatively flat cycle and walking route which is very family friendly. There are plenty of places to hire bikes along the route for those who fancy a cycle without the fuss of bringing your own bike. Even more appealing, there’s some fabulous cafes too – my favourite is Fremington Quay, the creators of cake magic!

Beer / Branscombe

If quintessentially English places are your jam then you should visit Beer. This small fishing village can be found in the heart of East Devon and offers a small selection of stores before leading you down to the highlight; the pebble beach sheltered by cliffs and dotted with fishing boats and beach huts. If you’re feeling active you can walk over to Branscombe (why not follow our example and have a bbq on the beach there?) or take the children up to Pecorama, a train based theme park which offers something for all ages.

Dartmoor

Picking just one part of Dartmoor to visit would be a travesty so put it all on your list and go for a drive. There are plenty of pubs and cafes nestled on the moor which means you can treat yourself to a well earned refreshment after you’ve completed one of the hundreds of walks available. With plenty of set routes to be found online, you’re bound to find a walk that fits both your time scale and your abilities. Prepare yourself for some stunning views though!

Darts Farm

A farm shop with a difference, Darts Farm is a real destination if you’re passing through the Exeter region. On the edge of a cycle path as well, this farm shop features a huge selection of carefully selected foods from meats through to chocolate, plenty of unique gifts and more that a couple different eating areas. The restaurant is very child friendly and serves delicious foods – the breakfast is worth a trip alone. If you fancy making a day out of it, why not hire a bike, cycle past the animals outside and join the cycle path down towards Exmouth or in to Exeter city itself?

Anywhere!

This countryside county is jam packed full of beautiful spots at every turn. There are food fairs, farm shops, river walks, beaches, cities, villages… the list is endless. My advice? Take a look at some luxury cottages in Devon, take the plunge and come and find out for yourself. We’ll see you soon…

I’m coming to Devon! You’ve well and truly sold it to me. I have a week off in August and want to drive somewhere and France is probably a little good far this time…

YES!!! Although you could probably fly somewhere far nicer for far less than it’d cost to drive down here and stay!

These are some really great suggestions for things to do in Devon. I’ve still got Dartmoor left to tick off – possibly the most widely known recommendation on your list, but one not to be missed.

I’d also recommend visiting Exeter for half a day/a day. If you head down to the quay there is a lovely walk to Double Locks pub along the river (you can also hire bikes or kayaks/canoes from saddles and paddles if you prefer) or you could keep going to Turf Locks, and even Exmouth if you fancy a trek (not one for kids!) There are plenty of bars and restaurants down by the quay for when you return and there’s also a new venue opening called The Boat Shed which is worth checking out
Have you visited Exeter? I would definitely recommend it!

We walked down to Turf Locks the other day, I love it down there! Great suggestion!
