Tips For Creating A Welcoming Guest Room

You don’t want your guests feeling unwelcome when they visit your home, so as you prepare a room for them, you should include anything that will make their stay a pleasant one. To give you some inspiration, you might find the following ideas useful.

Decorate the room appropriately

When it comes to decorating your guest room, you don’t want to put too much of your personality on the walls. You can still decorate to a style you find pleasing, but as it’s a room your guests will be sleeping in, you might want to resist the urge to put up photos of your family around the room, and anything else that is more suitable for you, rather than for your guests. Instead, choose tasteful pieces of art and knickknacks (nothing that will offend sensitive visitors), and decorate the room in calming colours to give your guests a relaxing and welcoming feel.

Furnish the room

You don’t want your guests sleeping on a mattress on the floor, so you will need to put a bed in there. You will also need a closet or a dresser so they aren’t forced to live of their suitcase. You might also include a desk and an office chair for any guests needing  a temporary workspace, and a comfortable sofa or chair for any guests looking to unwind of an evening in their own company. You could furnish the room cheaply by sourcing items second-hand, but to give your guests the best impression of you and the room, consider spending a little extra at your furniture showroom or at online stores to give the room a touch of class.

Provide a tea and coffee station

If your guests want an early morning or a late night cup of tea, they might not feel comfortable coming downstairs to your kitchen. Therefore, set up a space in the room for tea and coffee, with a kettle and coffee maker, alongside a mini- fridge for water and milk. Throw in some snacks too, including a plate of biscuits or a bowl of fruit, as this will keep them going should they crave something to eat both day and night.

Include a basket of toiletries

For any forgetful guests, include anything they might need, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoos and soap, combs and brushes, as well as plenty of fresh towels and any other toiletry items you think your guests might find useful.

Ensure the room is clean

This shouldn’t need to be said, but do make an effort to provide a clean and tidy room. Remove any clutter, vacuum thoroughly, and ensure your guests have clean bedding to sleep in. You might also want to freshen up the room with flowers or fragrant air-fresheners, and remember to open up the windows a day or two before your guests arrive to eliminate any mustiness or moisture.

Go the extra mile

There are other things you might include, such as a television for your guests downtime, as well as books and magazines to read. Have extra blankets on hand in case they feel cold during the night. Include a comfortable bathrobe or a dressing gown to aid their relaxation time. And be a good host, making the effort to find out what your guests need before and during their stay, going the extra mile to accommodate for their needs, provided what they ask for is reasonable.
