What Will It Take To Get A Good Night’s Sleep?

When you’re a mama, you might wonder if you’re ever going to get a good night’s sleep again. A full night’s sleep. Seven to nine hours. Uninterrupted. Alone. Apart from taking a mini break alone and indulging in a weekend of nothingness, it’s highly unlikely to happen. Because you have children and a partner and that’s not going to change. So instead of wishing for a moment of peace, you might want to try and work out what you can do in your current situation to make sure that you get a better night’s sleep.

Sleep is essential. We all know that. But sometimes, it’s easier to miss it than to realise that we actually need it for our health. When we sleep we heal. We re-energise. We recharge. And so it’s essential that you can work on getting into some kind of rhythm – any rhythm – with your sleep. Let’s take a look at how you can do it.

An Evening Routine

First of all, one of the things that you’re going to want to do here is to make sure that you have an evening routine that will work for you. Think about relaxing, slowing down, and preparing yourself for bed. If you’re running around finishing chores and then jumping into bed when you’re still wide awake, it will be tough. And here, switching off a little is going to help you too. Most recently, I’ve been trying to go up to bed 20-30 minutes earlier and grabbing some time for me; either reading or doing a face mask. I find I sleep far better than the days when I leap into bed and expect to drop off to sleep in seconds!

Switching Off

One of the things that is going to help you to nail that evening routine is to switch off. So put your phone down. Don’t get sucked into your social media feeds or emails because your mind will be too wired. Instead, read. Or take a bath. Or listen to something. Or do yoga. Allow yourself to switch off and your mind to unwind.

Comfort

From here, you may then also want to make sure that you’re comfortable too. Because if your bed setup isn’t comfortably and you don’t feel relaxed in it, then you’re going to find it hard to get off to sleep. So for this, look at what you need. Maybe you need a new bed and to look at silentnight mattresses and other options. Really work on this, saving up, and making the right choices so that you’re able to get to sleep well.

The Right Environment

And then finally, it’s definitely going to help you to have the right environment around you too. And that this looks like will vary between people. But ideally, you’re going to want the room to be at the right temperature (cool), so that you can get off to sleep. Then, you need it to be dark or not so dark or whatever is best for you. Here, you might also want to think about sounds. If you want to play sounds, that’s great. Although the perfect conditions can be hard to achieve with kids running in and out, it’s always best to get started with the right intentions. And then, you’ll have a much better chance at nailing that sleep.
