Thanks to the misty mountains, golden sand beaches, historic architecture and picturesque trails, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has been increasing in the recent years. We went a couple of years ago on honeymoon and had an absolutely magical trip, if you’ve not been yet, it’s definitely a country worth visiting! One of the most interesting places in Sri Lanka is the beautiful city of Galle – boasting fine sand beaches, a myriad of water activities, delicious food and friendly locals. It’s a perfect spot for family holidays too.
The city of Galle is a gem – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient trading port, colonial buildings, churches and museums, you’ll love the rich culture and beauty of this city. Tourism is growing, but it is not a place that is filled with tourists so that you will find the authenticity and friendliness of the locals appealing. You can also roam around the city in comfort, without having to worry about heavy traffic.
Attractions
Galle Fort is a must-visit for every traveller. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a walking or bike tour which uncovers its history and sea views, and old town’s ancient houses and churches.
Kids will love the Sea Turtle Hatchery Centre, where you can understand more about turtle conservation like how they are rescued and rehabilitated, and eventually released back to the sea. The sanctuary is stroller-friendly as well, so you can walk through the place with ease!
No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without visiting the beach. Dalawella Beach is perfect for families with kids – since the surrounding reefs break the waves, the sea is rather calm and easy to swim in. If you’re lucky, you can even see large sea turtles entering the sea to get food!
Accommodation
In Galle, there are many accommodation options including hostels, guest houses and villas. If you’re travelling as a family, private villas are your best bet as they’ll give you the space and flexibility you need with little ones in tow. Personalized service, utmost privacy and family-friendly amenities, Srilanka-Villa.com’s list of stunning villas are definitely worth considering. I’ve trawled the website and here are a few of my favourite picks:
Villa Victoria
A stunning beachfront villa overlooking the Indian Ocean. There is a home cinema lounge area where kids can play and watch movies in, while the adults can opt for in-villa massages to relax and unwind.
Villa Sepalika
Homely, spacious and surrounded by nature, Villa Sepalika is a perfect place if you’d like to unwind and have a peaceful stay. You can chill by the lush green garden on a hammock or take a dip in the 16-metre swimming pool. Pool fence, baby cots and a babysitter can be arranged with the attentive staff in the villa. They are dedicated to make your holiday a perfect one!
Woolamai Beach House
With a beach in front of the property and lush green, palm-filled forest behind it, Woolamai Beach House offers a scenic and serene setting ideal for a relaxing beach holiday. Although this villa is tucked away in a quiet area of Galle, famous attractions such as Galle Fort, Unawatuna, and Sea Turtle Hatchery Centre are just nearby!
With some preparation arrangements, a family trip can be a breeze and I hope these tips are useful for your next family trip. I can’t wait to get our little family out there!
