Hands up if you love fajitas?! Who doesn’t! But seriously, did you realise that store bought fajita spice mix often contains a lot of sugar in it? We were shocked to find that the fajita seasoning mix we used to use (if you ask us it’s THE brand for fajitas here in the UK) was packed full of sugar – making it hefty in calories and not great for younger family members. A couple of years ago we switched to making our own homemade fajita spice seasoning mix and honestly, it’s the best. I actually prefer it to the packets you can buy. Why? You can tweak the spice levels to suit different family members, and you can make up a big batch to keep in an airtight container or whip up some in seconds from the store cupboard. Hurrah for homemade fajita seasoning!
What’s that? You want the recipe too? Okay then, here’s our recipe for homemade fajita spice seasoning mix, it’s perfect for shredded chicken fajitas or our family favourite, chicken fajita rice, or even for a rub to use on the barbecue – trust me, once you go homemade, you won’t go back!
Homemade Fajita Spice Seasoning Mix
Makes enough to cover fajitas for a family of four. Scale up by replacing teaspoon measurements for tablespoons.
You Will Need:
1tsp of Cumin
1tsp of Chilli Powder (we use mild)
1tsp of Garlic Powder
1tsp of Onion Powder
1tsp of Smoked Paprika (if you don’t have smoked, regular will do)
1tsp of Table Salt
1tsp of Oregano
1tsp of Sweetener (or sugar if you’re not counting calories)
1/2tsp of Ground White Pepper (reducing this will give the mix less heat, increasing it will add more)
Recipe:
Mix it all together and use!
