Mother’s Day: My Top Mum Moments

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I’m excited to be celebrating my first one as a Mama! Whilst it’s lovely treating my mum for the day (just like every other day, right mum?!), I’m ridiculously excited and far too emotional about the fact that this year, I’ll be getting a card too… yay! It’s not the first Mother’s Day card I’ve received. Last year for Mothering Sunday I was heavily preggo and was lucky enough to get a ‘mum-to-be’ card from my bump. How clever of my baby to hand-pick, write and get Daddy to deliver a card on it’s behalf from inside the womb?! I’d expect nothing less. But this year, I know that that bump is now a boy… my boy, full of personality and completely in love with ME. A feeling that’s reciprocated ten million fold.

Talking of Mother’s Day, I’ve been asked by Truprint to put together my top Mum Moments so far and, since he turned ten months old this week, I’ve picked a top ten. A feat which was far harder than it sounded, just don’t ask me to put them in any order!

Before We Met

There’s a Savage Garden song that says ‘I knew I loved you before I met you, I think I dreamed you into life’ and there’s nothing truer than that. From the moment that test turned positive, I was pretty taken with motherhood but those first scans were incredible. I couldn’t believe a baby was really in there. And so full of beans as well, he never stayed still!

Our First Night

Ten days late but worth every moment. Our labour was fast and furious, he was here before we’d had a chance to get the bags out of the car. That first moment he was put in my arms was terrifying, overwhelming and awe-inducing; I didn’t know what to think. I sat there and stared at him for hours that night whilst the rest of the world slept. Right then, I knew I’d do anything for my child.

My 30th Birthday

I turned 30 six weeks after our son was born. We stayed in a hotel the night before and I woke in a puddle of baby wee to learn that Brexit was happening. To top it off our two hour drive to the New Forest for lunch and a weekend away turned in to a five hour scream-fest but… lunch was delicious and I opened my first ‘Happy Birthday Mummy’ card to see this little monkey posing on the inside. Everything else was forgotten. I thought I’d find my thirtieth a stressful experience but I look back and laugh at what a memorable weekend we had!

Our First Festival

We booked it pre-baby and in the run up to going we convinced ourselves we were crazy but taking a baby to a festival really was a memorable experience. We were adamant that having a child wouldn’t stop us doing things and this was a perfect example of that in action when we took him to CarFest at 3.5 months old. The place was set up for families and, with the help of a great carrier and a wonderful all-terrain buggy, we had a lovely time showing him the lights, the cars and all of the people. Ear defenders got us through the loud music and even let him sleep in the evenings whilst we had a sneaky dance… Seeing him take in all the action is one of my favourite mum moments.

Some Mother Son Time

Maternity leave seemed to fly by, especially now I look back on it with rose-tinted glasses. Some of my favourite moments were spent lazing around with this one, soaking in the time we had together and taking photos to send to my husband… lucky guy! I’ve got a mountain of selfies of me and my boy but this one is one of the few where we both looking at the camera.

Our First Holiday

Four months in and we decided to go away for the week to Crete. It was a week filled with moments like this, indulging completely in family time and enjoying our baby in the moment. No jobs, no housework, just family time. I panicked so much about flying with a baby (not that stressful in retrospect) and what to pack that by the time we got there I was desperate for a holiday! Plus look at the face on him… hilarious! Definitely a mum moment right there!

Visiting Stourhead

I’ve shared my love of Stourhead previously but taking our new family there is up with one of my favourite family days. It was just at the point where he was starting to get more personality and I love this photo my husband snapped without me fully appreciating what was happening. It feels like he captured my happiness in that moment…

Our First Christmas

Obviously this is going to make the cut. I love Christmas anyway but adding a child to it made it a whole different ball game. Even though he was too young to understand we threw ourselves into Christmas in a big way, even making sure Father Christmas ate half of his mince pie and drank his milk… even if the dog did hoover up the leftovers a few moments later! We spent the day with family but still managed to get some time in as a family of three, even if this is the only photo we managed to get of us all.

Eating Out Together

I’ve never felt as much pride as the moment we sat in a restaurant and all ate together. We struggled for a long time to get our son to eat properly but finally baby led weaning started to pay off. Since that first time, we’ve been able to enjoy multiple meals out together; one of our favourite things to do of a weekend. It’s a great chance for catching up on our week and spending some time together without distractions, plus anything that combines food and my favourite people is a winner in my book.

Lazy Weekends Walking

Our family isn’t just us three, we’ve also got the dog to consider. Each weekend we head out on a long family walk to make up for the fact that during the week, walks are short and functional. All of us love the fresh air and, living just down the road from a woods means we have plenty of beautiful places to explore. Dressed in my favourite motherhood comfy sweater, pushing the buggy around whilst the dog goes crazy has given me some of my favourite day to day memories. I love this photo so much! Every time we take a day out it reminds me that we’re a family now and I’m a mum… me!

Mum Moments - Walking

There we have it, some of my favourite #MumMoments summed up in photo form! Looking back at them now, I can’t believe how much we’ve achieved in the last ten months and how quickly my baby’s growing up – why did no-one warn me of that?! I feel like I’m forgetting it as quickly as it happens. As a family, we’re guilty of taking a million photos and never printing them down to display so I’ve been dropping some hints about these photo canvas prints at Truprint – just incase someone’s looking for some Mother’s Day inspo. Oh and here’s a little more help for the Dads out there… doesn’t that spa idea sound lovely? Hint hint.

What are your favourite mum moments? Are you better than me at printing them and displaying them at home?

Thanks Kris, I loved seeing them. Really does remind me how I need to print them down – I’d forgotten half of them!

What a lovely post. You have some really lovely memories. I adore those photos of him as a newborn, especially with the tongue poking out, how much has he changed?

I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day. You deserve lots of treats.

    • DevonMamaOnline 17th March 2017 at 9:10 am

You too – lets see what these husbands, sorry babies, come up with!! I know, he’s changed so much, I don’t think I really appreciated it until I had all the photos in one place! I’m so guilty of just taking loads on my phone and then leaving them… must do better at actually looking at them!

Well reading that through made me feel rather emotional thinking back to when my two were little (not that long ago, but they are toddlers now and the baby stage is well and truely over!!). I could have written a similar collection myself. I must be a little hormonal because the ‘feeling proud about meals out together’ paragraph brought a little lump to my throat!! Good on you having so many adventures! Kate x (www.fivelittlestars.com)

It’s such a nice feeling isn’t it? I was so worried we’d lose the eating out bit but it’s times like that that I really feel like a proper little family – sometimes it feels like I’m playing at it! It goes so quickly, I’m sure the toddler stage is lovely but I don’t want the baby stage to end! x

  • Emma 17th March 2017 at 3:07 pm

This is such a lovely post. You’ve had some totally precious memories made with your little boy. I need to look back on mine with Benjamin as it seems to have gone by so quick since he was born 5 months ago! x

    • DevonMamaOnline 19th March 2017 at 7:55 pm

It flies past doesn’t it?! It was so lovely going through everything and also seeing how much he’s changed over the last ten months… I’d recommend it to anyone! x

  • Sinead (shinnersandthebrood.com) 17th March 2017 at 4:21 pm

  • Isabella 17th March 2017 at 6:59 pm

Love how you’ve not letting the fact that having a child should stop you from living life to its fullest! X

    • DevonMamaOnline 19th March 2017 at 7:55 pm

We’re trying! We were both brought up doing lots of things so we want our child to experience the same, plus otherwise I think I’d go stir crazy!!

  • Angela Milnes 19th March 2017 at 12:14 am

This is awesome. I loved looking at your photos and reading about your firsts! I love the savage garden song too and reading your post reminded me of when my child was a baby. She is all grown up now and I want another!

    • DevonMamaOnline 19th March 2017 at 7:51 pm

Oh don’t remind me about the fact they have to grow up! I’m loving this stage FAR too much!

  • absolutely prabulous 19th March 2017 at 1:12 pm

Gosh this has made me realise how long ago my baby days were and reading your obvious utter contentment with being a mum has made me smile and feel a bit emotional and wistful actually. You did make me giggle with the ‘far too emotional’ line at the start lol. It’s weird isn’t it? You spend a lifetime giving your mum (presuming that was part of your experience) a card and then bam, you realise you’ll be getting one. Whole new dynamic. These pictures are gorgeous (although I’ll never know HOW so many people blog through pregnancy and then have the energy to do it once baby arrives. I couldn’t function for years after having my babies lol). My handsdown fave is the one of him on the birthday card with the facial expressions; it’s like looking at a cheeky teenager in miniature form. Hilarious!

    • DevonMamaOnline 19th March 2017 at 7:53 pm

Ahhh thank you for your lovely comment! I know, I ave to keep reminding myself that it’s not just me celebrating my mum this year… I get to be celebrated too!! Oh god, I know… it took me a couple months to get into the swing of things but it helps me remember to take pictures along the way, I’m hoping that means one day I can look back and laugh at all the parenting bits (and our hairstyles etc!!) x

  • Laura - Dear Bear and Beany 19th March 2017 at 6:29 pm

The first one is always special. This year will be my fourth one and I really can’t believe it. I still have to pinch myself that I am a mum. My eldest daughter now helps with buying the present, so who knows what I will get this year. I have to hint to her now x #KCACOLS

    • DevonMamaOnline 19th March 2017 at 7:49 pm

Eeek I can’t wait! Ahhh that’s nice that she can help now, makes it even better (especially as my husbands taste in gifts is hit and miss!!) Happy Mother’s Day for next week! x

  • Katy (What Katy Said) 19th March 2017 at 9:37 pm

This made me feel a bit teary, being a mother is amazing isn’t it? What a gorgeous post full of memories! I hope you have a wonderful Mothers Day xx

    • DevonMamaOnline 20th March 2017 at 9:55 am

It really is!! It’s nice to remember all the lovely bits that you forget in the day to day madness! Have a lovely Mother’s Day too! x

  • Becky, Cuddle Fairy 20th March 2017 at 9:12 am

Oh this is so sweet! From that first moment on, you know your child is the number one priority. I love how you guys brought him on holidays, to festivals & out to eat. Life & adventure can definitely carry on with kiddies in tow! Any of those photos printed would make a touching Mother’s Day gift! x

    • DevonMamaOnline 20th March 2017 at 9:53 am

It really can! I know, I think I need to have a mass printing and displaying session once we’ve decorated the house!

  • My Petit Canard 21st March 2017 at 12:01 am

Awww Hayley, these are such gorgeous pictures! So many wonderful moments, and experiences. You’ve packed so much into your first year as a family of three (or 4 counting the dog!). Reading your posts makes me want to make sure (even more) that I pack as much as I can in to these last few months of mat leave 🙂 Emily #KCACOLS
