Celebrating The Ordinary (And The Extraordinary) Moments

Sometimes, in the day to day whirlwind that is our lives, I find myself focusing on the big things. The bits that have gone wrong, the things we haven’t done, the things we’re still left to achieve. But in doing that I’m wiping out days and days of little achievements. Moments that are completely and utterly ordinary; going to the park, singing nursery rhymes together, playing trains; and yet extraordinary in their own right. I found myself worrying that whilst I capture the big moments on camera, all of these tiny moments get left behind.

And yet these are the very moments that I want to remember the most.

I want to remember his smile as he clicks the two pieces of train track together, completely unaware that the poor train is now going to crash into oblivion rather than complete its circular route. I want to be able to look back and see his excitement at wading through piles of leaves with a stick. The face he pulls when he has to walk through mud. The way his hand grips when he’s concentrating on something. Hell, I even want to remember the meltdowns he has when one of us goes to the bathroom without him. I’m determined to capture those precious moments in our lives that make up the every day

So this year, I’ll be celebrating the ordinary moments right here. And I promise I will. But to kick things off I’m starting with something a little bit more than ordinary. Because this week I want to share this moment… in the next few months, we’ll be adding to our family and making our son, my baby, a big brother.

This week we had our twenty week scan and I’m hugely pleased to share with you that Baby Number 2 is looking, well, perfect. It feels like a huge relief to have those checks done but also makes things that little bit more real. We are going to be a family of four this year. Where on earth has the time gone?!

I think there’s no better time to start documenting those ordinary moments, do you?

Huge congratulations! What wonderful news to start the year off with. Having become a family of four last year I can safely say it will be an absolutely magical year for you all! I completely agree though, as much as the big moments are wonderful, there is so much beauty in the little, everyday moments too. I always think that the big moments are the icing on the cake, it’s the little moments that are the foundation of our lives, and often the ones that have most significance.

Congratulations on bump #2. It’s the most beautiful thing to see your first born grow into the role of big brother :9). So true about cherishing the ordinary moments, striving to do more of that too

Thank you! I can’t wait to see it, although I’m also really nervous about forcing him to grow up and having less time for him… argh, sometimes you just can’t win as a parent can you!?
