Create an Allergy-Free Home with These Easy Tips

Allergies can ruin your day or week in a matter of hours, and because of this, it is essential to keep your home as free of allergens as possible. Here are a few tips to make it easier than ever.

Air Purifier

The first thing you should do is invest in an air purifier. Devices like Alen Breathesmart 35i take all the dirty air that is full of allergens and clean it, ensuring you aren’t just sitting in a cloud of pollen, dust, or something similar.

Air purifiers are also great for pollen season as, instead of constantly opening your windows for fresh air and letting allergens in, the air purifier will keep the air fresh and eliminate the pollen when you eventually need to open windows or doors.

Dust Smart

Dusting is a great way to limit allergens in your home, but only if done correctly. Simply put, it is always best to dust before vacuuming and from top to bottom to prevent the areas you’ve already cleaned from getting dirty again.

While a feather duster or something similar may be quicker, it is also a good idea to rather use a rag and surface cleaner when dusting, as the moisture will clump the dust on the rag instead of putting it in the air.

Vacuum Regularly

Your floor and carpets are often covered in dust, pollen, mold spores, etc, and therefore they also need to be cleaned on a regular basis. If you already suffer from allergies, it is best to invest in a powerful vacuum that can deep clean your carpeting.

Clean Your Vacuum

Additionally, you should clean out your vacuum often as, if it gets too full, you can end up putting dust back into the air. While this doesn’t mean you have to clean it after every use, it should be done on a monthly basis.

Deep-Clean Carpets

As mentioned, carpets can hold onto a lot of dust, pollen, etc, and sometimes vacuuming isn’t enough. Because of this, a deep clean is often useful in getting rid of the allergens that have embedded themselves.

This doesn’t have to be done regularly, and therefore the better option is to either hire a deep-cleaner for the day, or to use a cleaning service.

Regulate Moisture

Mold and mold spores also cause allergic reactions, and therefore, you need to be able to stop mold from growing or spreading. To do this, it is best to regulate moisture, such as opening the window or door when showering.

If you live somewhere that is often damp or cold, like the UK, for instance, the better option is to invest in a dehumidifier to suck up all the moist air.

Clean Your Bedding

Your bedding isn’t immune to allergens either, and that is why it is important to change and clean your bedding regularly. This is particularly true on days you dust, as there is a good chance that dust that ends up in the air will land on your pillows.

Plus, if you travel or you are planning on going away, cover your entire bed with a protective sheet to stop dust from forming on it while it isn’t in use.

Watch for Pollen

Pollen is one of the leading causes of allergic reactions, and therefore, you need to keep a close eye on it. Researching the pollen season for your area will allow you to know when you need to be the most careful.

When it is pollen season, limit how often you open doors and windows, invest in an air purifier, as mentioned above, and also step up your cleaning game.

Pet Cleanliness

Pet dander is another common issue; while it can be abundant, it is easy to clear away from your home. Firstly, clean your pet beds and blankets regularly, and all the areas that they spend the most time.

You also should give them a bath and brush them often, as this will clear away the dander the best and keep them fresh.

Declutter Often

Clutter is one thing that can hide a ton of dust, and clutter also makes it more difficult to clean properly. Therefore, it is best to declutter your space as often as possible, or avoid clutter completely.

If you do have a lot of clutter, though, rather move it all, clean it, clean the area it was in and then put it back. While not clutter, this applies to picture frames, lamps, sculptures, etc.

Use Natural Cleaning Products

Finally, don’t overlook the aspect that some chemical-based cleaners can make allergies worse. For insurance, many bathroom cleaners contain bleach, and bleach can irritate your throat and nasal passage, and therefore make allergies worse.

Instead, use natural cleaners that are completely, or at least close to, chemical-free to ensure you aren’t making your allergies worse, while cleaning to make them better.

As you can see, making your home allergy-free is incredibly easy if you take the time to keep your home clean and ensure you are lessening the chances of mold forming. Once you do that, your home won’t be a cause for concern when allergy season rolls around.
