We had kind of a big day yesterday in our household. Monkey tried his first food! Up until now he’s been exclusively breastfed but he turned six months on Tuesday, so we thought it was time to give him some solids to munch on. I’ve done a little research on weaning and, following that, we’ve decided to go down a mixed route. What does that mean? Primarily baby led weaning but I’ll shovel in some purees at various stages. That way hopefully he’ll get to actually eat some!
I’ll admit, I’ve been putting it off. He’s been ready to wean for a while – interested in food, great head control, good hand to mouth coordination but I wasn’t ready. I just wanted to keep him a baby for as long as possible! So we waited for him to hit 6 months, for us to get the equipment and for me to get my head around him growing up. Sob!
I bought a couple weaning essentials; a Bamboo Bamboo Suction Bowl and a highchair. I agonised over which highchair to go for but eventually we settled for the Cosatto Noodle Supa in Monster print, we LOVE it. I originally wanted a wooden highchair for style but we decided that the Cosatto gave us a different type of style, a lot of fun and comfort to boot!
We hadn’t necessarily decided to start yesterday but it felt right. He was busy gnawing on a teething ring and a wooden spoon and it felt like a great opportunity to get him munching on a bit of carrot. Lunchtime works well for us because we’re both home and he’s in a great mood. His face was hilarious! Imagine how confusing it must be for them having only ever tasted breast milk until now?! He didn’t seem to swallow any but he gave it a good chew and chucked it on the floor a few times – I’ll take that as a success!
We just need to get a bib or two and we can attempt something a bit more messy. Now we’ve started, I can’t wait!

Oh such an important milestone, they grow so fast. It’s sad for us but fantastic for them at the same time! It looks like it’s going to be an interesting journey for you all! #MarvMondays
You’re right – I’m finding it sad but amazing at the same time! They definitely do grow up far too fast.. where did my baby go?! Thanks for stopping by x
We loved baby led weaning. Messy but fun. And so much less hassle. Baby Bee (16 months) still loves a ice cold pouch of fruit purée when she’s teething. #marvmondays
So messy!! Just starting to get to grips with it.. a whole new world! Thanks for reading x
I loved starting baby led weaning! We found it so easy once we’d embraced the mess. The first thing Alfie tasted was chicken korma and rice after he grabbed a handful of my plate at 6 months! Cucumber and cheese sticks and were great to begin with, but soon got in to the habit of giving him the same as what we were having, which meant no extra cooking for me! Have fun, it’s a great milestone to reach #MarvMondays
Ooooh I’ve not thought of cheese sticks yet! We haven’t fully embraced it yet.. I need to get past the fact that my baby’s all grown up! Thanks for reading x
I’m no eager beaver with my second to start weaning as the mess drove me mad, so like you, this time we’ll be waiting until at least the 6 month mark and doing BLW. Though I’m in no rush, I also can’t wait to let the littlest munch on a carrot or cucumber (love the highchair)! Thanks for linking up to #MarvMondays. Kaye xo
We tried cucumber today and he LOVED it! Mess is also driving me crazy, I invested in some of those giant bibs today… fed up of clothes being ruined already!! Thanks for hosting x ps. it’s awesome isn’t it?!
Your adventures as a mother? Well I love to follow it to see those adventures of yours,I’m on!
Ahh thank you!!
We’re going to start Max weaning soon. Like you I’ve also been putting it off in an attempt to keep him a baby and stop him from growing so fast but it hasn’t really worked too well, he just won’t stop growing! Good luck on the messy weaning 🙂 #MarvMondays
I know, they just keep growing anyway… inconsiderate little people!!! Oh good luck, let me know how you get on embracing the mess (it’s SO messy!!). Thanks for reading x
