How Can Your Home Make You Happy?

Does your home make you happy? If you don’t walk through the door and feel genuinely glad to be home then something needs to change, here are some of the ways your home can make you happy and boost your mental health.

Find the right property

First things first, if your property doesn’t suit you then chances are you’re never going to be completely happy. Of course, many of us are limited by things like budget and distance from work/ school and other things- but do have a look around and see what else is out there. Maybe you’re out in the sticks and crave a home that’s closer to local amenities. Or maybe you live in a busy part of town and want to live somewhere quieter. If you happen to find something that’s better suited to you, have a company like Bekins Moving Solutions move you out and enjoy your new surroundings. A new home is often a fresh start too, and so can be a great way to improve your quality of life.

Decorate in calming colours

As humans we’re highly influenced by colour, and this is something that should be on your mind when you’re choosing a colour palette. You might love bold shades like red or yellow for example, but these don’t always translate well when you’re decorating and can look a little brash and create an environment that doesn’t feel that relaxed. A good tip is to decorate in neutral colours, and then bring in colours using accessories. So with cushions and throws, flowers, rugs and curtains. Instead of putting bold colours over walls and on floors which can look overwhelming. If you want to create a relaxed ambiance, light and pastel tones work well or you could keep it monochrome by adding black, grey or dark brown accents.

Add plants

Having plants in the home is good for you. They purify the air and have a positive impact on mental health, they make us feel happier and more productive. Consider adding a large potted variety to the corner of a room, a smaller variety on your desk or table or dotting around some smaller plants like cacti and succulents. They’re a great way to add colour and texture to a room in an unfussy way, and are beneficial to both your mental and physical health.

Make it cosy

Home is where we all want to feel at our cosiest and comfiest. When you get home from work, chances are all you want to do is kick your shoes off, put on your cosiest pyjamas and chill (especially at this time of year) so make sure your home is up to scratch! Invest in a good sofa and a good bed. Purchase squashy cushions, cosy throws and sumptuous rugs. Light some scented candles, set the lamps down to a cosy light setting. Perfect to put your feet up and totally unwind.
